The Gospel of Thomas for Awakening:
A Commentary on Jesus’ Sayings as Recorded by His Apostle Thomas

by Abbot George Burke (Swami Nirmalananda Giri)

Gospel-of-Thomas-Cover-220

“From the very beginning there were two Christianities.”

While the rest of the Apostles dispersed to various areas of the Mediterranean world, the apostle Thomas travelled to India, where growing evidence shows that Jesus spent his “Lost Years,” and which had been the source of the wisdom which he had brought to the “West.”

In The Gospel of Thomas for Awakening, Abbot George shines the “Light of the East” on the sometimes enigmatic sayings of Jesus recorded by his apostle Saint Thomas, revealing their unique and rich practical nature for modern day seekers for spiritual life.

The Gospel of Thomas is a fascinating recount of the wisdom sayings of Jesus, as recalled by Thomas. Thomas was directed to go to India to bring this message. I have traveled to Kerala and Chennai to personally validate this teaching and Thomas’ presence in Southern India for myself. This part of the history of Christianity is not that “popular” in the Roman and Western versions of Christianity, sometimes even denied.

These original teachings of Christ are without any of the stories and are possibly the oldest known text related to the Jesus story. Importantly, this book is entitled The Gospel of Thomas for Awakening – and this is the role this wonderful commentary plays in my life – for Awakening.

If you have an interest in this subject, and especially if you feel resistance to studying a non-canonical book, this is the one to read. It is well written and easy to understand. This is not a modified version of any religion. These are Truth Saying from a Master Teacher, and as such, can be a very helpful addition to any practice or tradition. I recommend this book with no reservation. For those who have ears to hear.
